Darkness cannot exist in the presence of light. When light is brought into a dark room, the darkness is driven out and the light prevails. Always. The light prevails.
There are absolutes that we all experience everyday. Truths that are not subjective in nature, but where A always leads to B. For instance, if you place your bare hand into a fire, it will get burned. The fire does not have the liberty to say, “well, she didn’t mean to put her hand in the fire…so I will spare her this time.” Irrefutable cause and effect. And it is within this truth that we find ourselves with David, Uzzah, and the transportation of the Ark.
The Ark of the covenant was the symbol of God’s presence, of His Holiness. Now to wrap our minds around the significance of how holy God is, think back to the tabernacle…the various rooms, the cleansing ceremonies, the standards set forth by God so that still only a select few (the high priests) could even enter the inner room, the Holy of Holies beyond the veil. Because sin and God’s Holiness cannot exist in the same space. Now here’s Uzzah, and God has given orders that no one shall touch the Ark lest they die. The ark is being transported, it teeters, and Uzzah reaches out to right it and in doing so he is struck down. In the confines of our human mind, we think subjectively and may question why? After all, Uzzah was just trying to help! But the holiness of God is not a subjective matter, and regardless of intention, sin and holiness cannot exist in the same space.
If you can grasp God’s holiness, his complete separateness from us, then perhaps you can begin to grasp the significance of the gift of Jesus. Because Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross tore the veil, covered our sin, and set us up to be in position to receive the Holy Spirit. God’s spirit. What was once separate from us now resides within us as believers. Can you wrap your mind around His presence within you? Can you feel the significance of the gift of Jesus to cover you in such a way that you are no longer at odds with your Creator? We have the awe-inspiring and humbling privilege to be His daughters, to have Him reside within us as we walk this journey out. Who do you see when you look in the mirror…the sinner, walking in condemnation. Or his daughter, walking in victory. The light of His gift drives out the darkness. And through the power of His spirit, we prevail.
2 Samuel 7:18-22
Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far? 19 And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord God, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And this is the custom of man, O Lord God. 20 Again what more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord God! 21 For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know. 22 For this reason You are great, O Lord God; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
Matthew 27:51
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.
