The cave was his sanctuary of distress…one without comfort…with worry, pain, and uncertainty…where the injustice of it all was a blaring reminder of his own inability to escape this flight of fear.
Have you walked in this valley as David did? Where fear, worry, or pain were your constant companions. Or maybe it’s the injustices you have faced that have weighed you down with the burden to prevail against them and yet powerless to change their reality. Injustices against you…injustices against those you love.
Our responses can vary in the midst of our valleys…hopelessness, frustration, hurt, anger, vengeance. It’s hard not to justify the flurry of emotions that erupt when we feel wronged by another. We can justify these emotions straight into action at times, and the truth is that riding this wave of anger and vengeance will have us walking the slippery slope of sin.
Proverbs 24:29 states Do not say, “Thus I shall do to him as he has done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.” God truly is FOR us, and He will work all things together.
When we are in the wilderness of our emotions, when logic and ration escapes us, when we are overwhelmed with the desire to fight our way out, I pray we all listen for the only voice that matters. The only voice that has reason and that will guide us through these murky waters into the light of peace. You don’t have to carry anger and bitterness and resentment and revenge inside your heart. Indeed, you dare not. Jesus warned that an unforgiving heart will destroy you in the end (Matthew 6:15; 18:35) I pray we do not grieve the Holy Spirit by acting outside of God’s will, but that we choose to keep our eyes on Him, just as David did, trusting that He is at work…that He will meet us in our caves and our valleys and that we can take refuge under His wings.
Psalm 57:1
For my soul takes refuge in You;
And in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge
Romans 8:31
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
